Memorial Day has always been a reminder to pause.
As a veteran, business owner, and leader, it’s easy to get caught up in the pace of everyday life — responsibilities, deadlines, growth, and the constant motion of building something meaningful. But Memorial Day has a way of slowing everything down and bringing life back into perspective.
It reminds me to appreciate the freedoms, opportunities, family, friendships, and simple moments we often take for granted — because many came at a cost paid by others.
For those of us who served, Memorial Day carries a different kind of weight. It reminds us of the people we stood beside, the sacrifices made, the stories carried forward, and those who never made it home. It reminds us that service has a cost, and that freedom has never been free.
Living and working in Kansas City, I’m reminded every day how strong communities are built — neighbors helping neighbors, families supporting one another, small businesses investing in their communities, veterans continuing to serve in new ways, and people showing up for causes greater than themselves. That spirit of service feels especially meaningful on Memorial Day.
Kansas City has long been connected to military service through places like Fort Leavenworth and the many veterans and military families who continue to call this region home. Their leadership, sacrifice, and commitment help shape the character of this community in ways both visible and unseen.
And while Memorial Day often marks the unofficial start of summer for many across the country, I think it’s also an opportunity for all of us — no matter where we live or what path we’ve walked — to take a moment to reflect on what truly matters. Family. Service. Friendship. Community. Gratitude. Purpose.
Across this nation, generations of Americans have answered the call to serve something larger than themselves. Because of that sacrifice, we get to experience ordinary moments that are actually extraordinary when you stop long enough to think about them — sitting around the dinner table, watching kids play outside, building businesses, pursuing dreams, gathering with friends, and simply being present with the people we love.
Memorial Day reminds me not to rush past those moments.
Today, I’m taking a moment to pause. To remember those who gave everything. To reflect on priorities. To appreciate family, community, and the privilege of being able to live, lead, and serve because others sacrificed so much for all of us.
May we never stop remembering what this day truly represents.
